Later Anaïswrote words to the chorus and The Westerlies added their magic to the instrumental. Fleet Foxes Songs has 9 songs in the following movies and tv shows. Robin wrote the verses and pre-chorus as a kind of dialogue with Justin, recalling a conversation they once had backstage in Phoenix. I shared the sketch with Robin Pecknold, who I’ve been a fan of forever and who I’d been dreaming would join us on this record. Justin first heard it while driving and immediately the chorus melody came into his head. ![]() Adventure, the beauty of nature, the wonder of the changing of the seasons. I was thinking about The Band and The Grateful Dead… maybe imagining this Big Red Machine album was some version of The Last Waltz. Ragged Wood From an album that contains so much about heartbreak, and abandonment, Ragged Wood is everything we love about Fleet Foxes. Phoenix was one of the last songs we wrote for this record. Anyway There are a lot of moving parts or phases to this song- I like the surfy guitar, and then the chords cutting across the intro- the drums slap and tumble like Keith. It’s very much the process of this record, the exchange of ideas. I used to hear some Fleet Foxes on the the 'adult alternative' (which is now 'modern hard rock station 3 in a 50 mile radius') radio station and would like to learn more. That’s literally what it’s about, and when Anaïs Mitchell heard it, she rewrote Justin’s chorus lyrics, almost like a response to Robin. He wrote the song essentially as a dialogue between him and Justin, recalling the only conversation they ever had in person, which was backstage at a venue in Phoenix, Arizona, 10 years ago at a loading bay dock. He was really into it and moved and inspired. I had written “Phoenix” and Justin wrote the chorus melodies, and I just sent it to Robin as kind of a work in progress, imagining this multitude of voices could be a dialogue between different singers.
